About Moffatt-Ladd House

The Moffatt-Ladd House, also called the William Whipple House, is a historic house museum in Portsmouth. It was built in 1763 in the Georgian style and was once home to William Whipple, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Revolutionary War general. The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in New Hampshire has cared for the property since 1912, and it operates as a museum today. Visitors can explore the lives of the Moffatt, Whipple, and Ladd families through the house and its many original family belongings. The museum also aims to show how both free and enslaved people lived in the house, and how they shaped American, New Hampshire, and Portsmouth history.
