Built as the home, office, and working farm of Governor Benning Wentworth, this 40-room clapboard house sits on Little Harbor in Portsmouth. The state park site is a National Historic Landmark managed by the state historic sites bureau with help from a volunteer commission. Visitors can tour rooms that reflect several architectural periods, admire hand-carved woodwork, and see the council chamber and a hidden spy closet. Heritage lilacs bloom on the grounds, and the waterside Little Harbor Loop Trail offers a walk of about 1.5 miles.
