The association was founded in 1898 by local residents led by educator Caroline Gallup Reed, who aimed to collect and protect materials about county history. Its main museum building in Freehold was completed in 1931 in a Georgian style. Visitors can see the current Storm of Revolution exhibit on the American Revolution in the county, along with a permanent painting of Washington rallying troops at Monmouth. The group also runs historic houses, including Covenhoven House, Marlpit Hall and Taylor Butler House, and offers a research library that is open by appointment. The Allen House is closed for renovations and is expected to reopen in 2027.
