The Morris Museum of Art was founded in 1985 by William S. Morris III, publisher of The Augusta Chronicle, as the first museum devoted to the art and artists of the American South. It opened in 1992, built around 230 pictures bought from the collector Robert P. Coggins, and its permanent collection now holds more than 5,000 works from the early nineteenth century to the present. The galleries sit beside Riverwalk Augusta on the Savannah River, so a visit pairs easily with a walk along the levee. Changing exhibitions, Friday films and artist talks fill the calendar.
