Andersonville National Historic Site sits in rural southwest Georgia, roughly midway between Macon and Albany. It preserves the site of Camp Sumter, a Confederate prison for captured Union soldiers, along with the Andersonville National Cemetery and the National Prisoner of War Museum, which covers American prisoners of war from every conflict. The cemetery holds thousands of Civil War burials and remains an active burial ground for veterans.
