Mount Greylock, at 3,491 feet, is the highest point in Massachusetts, and the reservation around it was the state's first public forest preserve, set aside in 1898. From May to late October the auto roads climb to the summit, where the 93-foot Veterans War Memorial Tower and the stone Bascom Lodge, built by the CCC in the 1930s, open for the season. Trails range from easy walks to very hard climbs. Start at the visitor center on Rockwell Road, and note that vehicles over 22 feet are banned from the summit roads.
