National Memorial for Peace and Justice

417 Caroline St · Montgomery, AL

Why you should go…

Opened in 2018 on six acres in Montgomery, the memorial holds more than 800 corten steel monuments, one for each county where a documented racial terror lynching took place. They are engraved with the names of more than 4,400 Black Americans killed between 1877 and 1950. Sculptures by Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, Dana King and Hank Willis Thomas stand on the grounds, and a memorial garden gives you a quiet place to reflect. One ticket also covers the Legacy Museum and Freedom Monument Sculpture Park.

Good to know

General sightseeing guidance

Habits that pay off across this whole category, not rules for this one venue. Always check the official site for the specifics.

  • The forecast is part of the ticket

Haze, low cloud, and rain flatten a view. Clear-day visits are worth rearranging your plans for.

  • Golden hour sells out first

Sunset slots at observation decks and cruises are the first to go, so book those further ahead.

  • Dress a layer warmer

It is always breezier up high and out on the water than it feels at street level.

  • Timed entry is common

Plenty of landmarks release tickets in windows rather than at the door, so check before you walk over.
