This Smithsonian museum holds about 12,000 objects, the largest publicly held collection of African art in the United States, from ancient to contemporary works. Most of the building sits underground, so you enter through a red granite pavilion with domed roofs beside the Enid A. Haupt Garden. Admission is free and docent-led tours run during the week when docents are available. The closest Metro stops are Smithsonian and L'Enfant Plaza.
