Rest on the brick paths of a four-acre Smithsonian garden behind the Castle, with a Victorian-style parterre, a Moongate pool and a Moorish fountain court.
Independence Avenue SW at the Smithsonian Castle, Washington, DC · Washington, DC
Behind the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall, this four-acre garden opened in 1987 and actually sits on the roofs of the African Art museum, the Sackler Gallery and the Ripley Center below. The centerpiece is a parterre replanted in new patterns every few seasons. The Moongate Garden has 9-foot pink granite gates around a pool inspired by Beijing's Temple of Heaven, and the Fountain Garden is modeled on the Alhambra's Court of the Lions. Entry is free, and it stays open while the Castle is under renovation.
