About New Germany State Park

New Germany State Park sits in Garrett County, Maryland, on roughly 508 acres beside the Savage River State Forest. Its forests lie between Big Savage Mountain and the Continental Divide near Meadow Mountain. Visitors can hike or ride along about ten miles of multi-use trails. The small lake offers fishing, swimming, and paddling. Cell phone coverage is absent here, so an emergency phone is located inside the Lake House. Water system and wastewater upgrades planned for 2026 and 2027 will close some cabins, campsites, and pavilions at times. Snowmobile riding is not allowed inside the park, but the park office sells Maryland snowmobile permits for nearby trails. The area also has a history as an early winter sports spot, with recreational skiing starting here in 1940.
