Why you should go…
The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile crushed-limestone rail trail running from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cumberland, Maryland, crossing 20 bridges and passing through five tunnels. At Cumberland it links to the 184.5-mile C&O Canal Towpath, forming a nearly level, non-motorized route toward Washington, DC. The trail is coordinated by the nonprofit GAP Conservancy, which promotes the corridor and publishes its official map and guide, and draws more than a million visits a year.
