Descend the stairways into the Niagara Gorge and you're in another world: four kilometres of rugged trails winding through pristine Carolinian forest, past house-sized boulders left behind as the falls eroded upstream over thousands of years. Paths drop more than 200 feet to the river's edge near the Whirlpool Rapids, and the Nature Centre at the rim offers maps, guided hikes in summer, and bouldering permits for climbers. Admission is free; wear proper footwear, the terrain is steep and real.
