Old State Capitol Plaza, 6th & Adams Streets, Springfield, IL · Springfield, IL
This Springfield landmark is a reconstruction of Illinois' former statehouse, used as the seat of state government from 1840 to 1876. It is one of two preserved former Illinois capitol buildings. Restorers rebuilt it during the civil rights era, and it is tied to Abraham Lincoln's House Divided speech and to activists John Jones and Frances Gage. Visitors can join a guided tour or walk through on their own. Staff are available to answer questions, and reservations are accepted but not required.
