Free Frank McWorter, who bought freedom for his wife, himself and 13 more relatives, platted New Philadelphia in 1836, the first town in the United States platted and registered by an African American before the Civil War. Little stands above ground today: the town's 144 lots and gravel streets survive mostly as traces found by archaeologists. You can walk a path through the townsite with numbered signs and wayside exhibits, or use the New Philadelphia Association's augmented reality tour on your phone. Entry is free, but there are no restrooms on site, and ticks live in the tall grass.
