Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park

National Park Service site on the prairie where U.S. and Mexican forces fought the opening battle of the Mexican-American War in May 1846.

About Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park

The park preserves the battlefield where U.S. and Mexican troops clashed on May 8, 1846. That engagement opened a two-year conflict that reshaped the continent's map. The park's interpretation covers the war, its causes and its consequences, and presents the perspectives of both the United States and Mexico. Visitors can see an overlook with a view across the battlefield and a Mexican field gun, and the park offers living history programs. The park is a newer National Park Service unit that is still developing its facilities and visitor services.
