About Presidio La Bahía

Spanish soldiers moved this presidio to its spot on the San Antonio River in the 1740s, and the town of Goliad grew up around it. During the Texas Revolution it saw the Battle of Goliad in 1835 and the Goliad massacre in March 1836, when Col. James Fannin and more than 300 of his men were killed. Restored in the 1960s to its 1836 look, it is a National Historic Landmark run by the Catholic Diocese of Victoria as a museum. The fort and the Our Lady of Loreto chapel are open year round.
