This 352-foot column rises over the village of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812 and the lasting peace among Britain, Canada and the United States. Six naval officers, three British and three American, are buried beneath the rotunda floor. Ferries reach the island from Port Clinton, Sandusky and Catawba Island. The observation deck is closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, but the grounds and visitor center remain open.
