The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium covers 77 acres in Highland Park and opened in 1898 as the Highland Park Zoo. You walk through areas such as the African Savanna, Tropical Forest, Water's Edge, The Islands and Jungle Odyssey, with a separate aquarium and a Kid's Kingdom for younger visitors. Residents include African elephants, lions, polar bears, penguins, sharks and red pandas. Parking is free.
