Pokagon is a 1,260-acre Indiana state park on Lake James and Snow Lake, opened in 1925 and named for Potawatomi leaders Leopold and Simon Pokagon. Its toboggan run, started by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, drops 90 feet over a quarter mile, reaching 42 mph in 20 to 30 seconds; rides cost $20 per toboggan per hour. In warmer months there is a swimming beach, boat rentals, escorted horse rides and nine marked trails of up to 2.2 miles. The park also has the Potawatomi Inn, a lodge first opened in 1927. Entry is $15 per out-of-state vehicle and $7 for Indiana plates.
