A railway museum on the North Fork of Long Island that keeps local railroad history alive through rail cars, locomotives, and model train displays.
416 Griffing Avenue, Riverhead, NY (main location); also 440 4th Street, Greenport, NY 11944 · Riverhead, NY
The museum focuses on the history of Long Island's railroads and operates from two sites, one in Riverhead and one in Greenport. Visitors can see a collection of rail cars and locomotives, railroading artifacts, and interactive exhibits. A large historic Lionel layout runs throughout the day, and a hands-on train yard lets guests explore a historic LIRR caboose. A restored carousel-style park train from the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair is available to ride. The museum also runs a research center with archived images, film, and records, available by appointment, and its gift shops sell toys, books, and railroad items. The group is raising funds to finish restoring LIRR Steam Locomotive 39 so it can return to service.
