Red Bank Battlefield Park sits on the Delaware River waterfront in Gloucester County and is the county's historic park. It marks the site where Hessian forces attacked Fort Mercer on October 22, 1777, a clash that helped shape the Revolutionary War on the river. The grounds include the James and Ann Whitall House, built in 1748, which hosts tours and programs on the park's history. Volunteer Gloucester County Certified Gardeners tend historic gardens growing period-appropriate plants, and a butterfly house is also part of the site. Fort Mercer and its sister fort Mifflin across the river blocked British use of the waterway, though both were eventually destroyed or abandoned.
