Why you should go…
Rhyolite boomed after prospectors found gold in the Bullfrog Hills in 1904, and by 1907 it had electric lights, a school and an opera house. The Montgomery Shoshone mine closed in 1911 and the town was nearly empty by 1920. Today you can walk past the walls of the three-story Cook Bank Building, part of the old jail, the train depot and the Bottle House, built in 1906 from about 50,000 beer and liquor bottles. The site sits off NV-374 on the way to Death Valley and is day use only, with no camping.
