Rice Park was given to the city in 1849, making it Saint Paul's first public space, and it is named for territorial senator Henry Mower Rice. The small downtown square is framed by the 1902 Landmark Center, the 1910 Saint Paul Hotel, the Central Library and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. It has a fountain, public art including statues of Peanuts characters, and hosts concerts and festivals, among them events of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. A 2019 renovation added wider paths and cafe tables. Street parking is available around downtown.
