Stand on a high bluff above the Mississippi River and downtown Saint Paul beside six ancient burial mounds, a sacred Dakota site.
10 Mounds Blvd, Saint Paul, MN 55106 · Saint Paul, MN
This bluff-top park above the Mississippi River holds the only known burial mounds left in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul urban core. People built the mounds about 1,500 to 2,000 years ago, and the Dakota later buried their dead here; at least 37 mounds once lined the bluffs and six remain. Saint Paul made it a park in 1893 and in May 2025 renamed it Wicaḣapi, Dakota for cemetery. The overlook looks across the river valley to downtown, and there are picnic shelters, a playground and tennis courts. Treat the mounds as a cemetery; alcohol is not allowed.
