Smithgall Woods is a mountain property near Helen in White County, reclaimed from land once mined with hydraulic methods in the nineteenth century. Anglers come for Dukes Creek, a catch-and-release trout stream, while hikers and cyclists use the park's trails and roads through hardwood forest. Six cottages offer overnight stays, and a visitor center, picnic shelters, and a campground for youth and conservation groups round out the facilities. Visitors must register at the visitor center, and trout fishing is limited to certain days and requires a reservation.
