Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument

Indiana's official memorial to Hoosier veterans from several wars, topped by a Victory statue and offering a city-view observation level.

Indianapolis, IN

About Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument

The monument serves as Indiana's official tribute to residents who fought in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Frontier Wars, and the Spanish-American War. Its gray limestone, quarried in Owen County, rises to a height comparable to the Statue of Liberty. Sculptural groups and figures by Rudolf Schwarz decorate the structure and grounds, and a Victory statue tops it. Visitors can climb or ride up to an enclosed observation level with a gift shop, where panoramic views of downtown Indianapolis are available. Visit rules limit tower access on very hot days, and the tower is not recommended for people with claustrophobia or fear of heights.
