The Athenaeum combines a free public library with an art gallery holding American landscape paintings, including a number of Hudson River School works. Founded by Horace Fairbanks as a community culture center, the building keeps a strong Victorian character from the 1800s. It also hosts concerts, author talks, lectures, and educational events throughout the year, and it is operated as a private nonprofit.
