Staunton River State Park is one of Virginia's original state parks, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened in 1936 where the Dan and Staunton rivers meet Buggs Island Lake. It was the first Virginia state park named an International Dark Sky Park, and a field by the visitor center is set aside for astronomy. More than 17 miles of trails, a boat launch, eight 1930s CCC cabins and a 48-site campground fill its roughly 2,400 acres. Parking is $5 per vehicle.
