The Greenbrier is a resort on 11,000 acres in the Allegheny Mountains, styled for decades by Dorothy Draper and Company in bold colors and florals. Guests can play golf, visit the spa and casino, or try falconry, horseback riding, fishing and off-road driving. Beneath the hotel is a bunker built from 1959 to 1962 as a secret shelter for Congress, decommissioned after a 1992 newspaper report revealed it. Part of it is now open on guided bunker tours.

Rates swing with the calendar
Midweek nights and shoulder-season dates are usually the kindest on price.
Read what is included
Parking, resort fees, and breakfast are the three extras that most often land on the final bill.
Ask at booking, not at the desk
Early check-in, late checkout, and room preferences go further when you request them in advance.
On a short trip, location wins
What you can reach on foot from the door matters more than the amenities list.
