The House on the Rock

5754 State Road 23 · Spring Green, WI

Why you should go…

Alex Jordan Jr. began building this house atop Deer Shelter Rock around 1945 and opened it to paying visitors in 1959. A self-guided walk takes you through the Infinity Room, which reaches 218 feet out over the valley with 3,264 windows. Further in you find the Heritage of the Sea, with over 200 model ships and a 200-foot sea creature battling a Kraken, and the Streets of Yesterday. The carousel carries 269 animals, 182 chandeliers and over 20,000 lights, though visitors cannot ride it.

Good to know

General attractions guidance

Habits that pay off across this whole category, not rules for this one venue. Always check the official site for the specifics.

  • Book the time slot, not just the ticket

Timed entry is now the norm at big-draw attractions, and online tickets are often cheaper than the gate.

  • Grab the daily schedule on arrival

Feeding times, keeper talks, and shows run on a posted timetable that changes day to day.

  • The first hour is the quietest

Queues build through late morning and peak after lunch, so an early start buys you the shortest waits.

  • Budget past the ticket price

Parking, lockers, strollers, and food inside the gates are common extras worth planning for.
