About Washita Battlefield National Historic Site

This National Park Service site in western Oklahoma marks the location of a surprise dawn attack in November 1868, when Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the 7th U.S. Cavalry struck a Southern Cheyenne camp. The site is a place of remembrance for those who died there and illustrates the conflicts of the Great Plains Wars. It sits within Black Kettle National Grassland near Cheyenne, and the wider battlefield landmark extends through the city.
