About Heavener Runestone Park

This 55-acre park on Poteau Mountain, outside Heavener, is built around a large sandstone slab carved with eight runic letters, first documented in 1923. Some say Vikings carved it around 1000 AD, while most scholars think a 19th-century Scandinavian settler did. Two miles of trails lead past the stone to a scenic overlook, and there are picnic shelters, a playground, campsites and a gift shop. Admission is free, and the park hosts a yearly Viking festival.
