Waubonsie State Park sits in southwest Iowa within the Loess Hills and is tied to the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail. Visitors get wide scenery across the Missouri River valley and the Nebraska plains. The park offers hiking routes along ridgetop prairies and through shaded woodland valleys, plus multi-use trails open to mountain bikers, horseback riders, and snowmobilers in the northern section. Lake Virginia, a 7-acre lake, is popular for fishing and paddling, though only electric motors are allowed. Overnight options include cabins, a modern campground, and a primitive equestrian campground. The Wa-Shawtee Lodge and Overlook Shelter can be reserved for gatherings. A separate Blackburn State Park Unit lies about 16 miles north.
