Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area preserves the historic river crossing that linked New Spain, the American Southwest and California, and was the first National Heritage Area established west of the Mississippi River. It includes the Colorado River State Historic Park, the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, and riverfront parks connected by a multi use path. The heritage area also maintains about 400 acres of restored wetlands and an interpretive plaza along the river.
