Baltimore National Cemetery is run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and sits in the Beechfield area of southwest Baltimore, straddling the city line with Baltimore County. It opened as one of several interwar national cemeteries and was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1941. The grounds began as a historic estate called Cloud Capped, which dates to the mid-1700s. Today the cemetery holds tens of thousands of interments, mostly World War II and World War I veterans, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also oversees several satellite cemeteries, including Annapolis and Loudon Park.
