About Barnegat Light Public School

This small museum occupies the old one-room schoolhouse that taught children at the northern end of Long Beach Island from 1903 until 1951. The building was turned into the town's museum in 1954. It sits near the Barnegat Lighthouse, which the museum describes as the second oldest lighthouse on the Northeastern seaboard. Exhibits cover the town's history, its fishing industry, and Long Beach Island, including the lighthouse's original first-order lens. Visitors can also climb the lighthouse for views over the area. The schoolhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its significance in education.
