Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary is a 100-acre nature sanctuary near Prince Frederick, at the northern edge of the natural range of bald cypress trees. The Nature Conservancy bought it in 1957, it became a National Natural Landmark in 1965, and Calvert County runs it today. A quarter-mile boardwalk takes you into the swamp, where you may hear frogs and songbirds such as the prothonotary warbler. Entry is free, pets are not allowed, and the gate closes 30 minutes before the park does. Use the street address in your GPS, since other routes can lead onto private land.
