Take a free guided tour of the stone jail where a mob killed Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum in June 1844.
310 Buchanan St, Carthage, IL 62321 · Carthage, IL
On June 27, 1844, a mob stormed the upper room of this county jail and killed Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter-day Saint movement, and his brother Hyrum. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bought the building in 1903 and runs it as a historic site. Free guided tours start at the visitors' center with a short film, then go through the jailer's family rooms and the cell rooms, where the original door with a bullet hole remains. The gardens hold a life-size statue of the brothers.
