Cave Hill National Cemetery sits in the northwest section of the private Cave Hill Cemetery, which covers about 300 acres. The VA's national cemetery began with a small donated plot in 1861 for Union soldiers who died near Louisville, and it was made an official national cemetery in 1863. Burials include African-American U.S. Colored Troops and Confederate soldiers moved from railroad sites in 1867. Visitors can see the Unknown Soldiers Monument, a memorial to 32nd Indiana Infantry soldiers, and a cast-iron Gettysburg Address plaque. The cemetery is closed to most new burials, though openings occasionally arise. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
