About Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site

This state-run historic site preserves a large Second Empire house in New Albany, on the Ohio River. It was the home of William Culbertson, a businessman who moved to Indiana as a young man, built a fortune, and invested heavily in local civic and charitable causes. Guided tours cover the formal parlors, dining rooms, bedrooms, kitchen, and laundry room, and explain the family's story and the restoration of the interior. The house was bought by the state in 1976, and staff and volunteers later restored its original rooms.
