Cliff Cave Park covers 525 acres of woods, wetlands and limestone bluffs on the Mississippi River in south St. Louis County. Its cave served as a riverside tavern in the 1770s and as a wine cellar holding up to 100,000 gallons by 1870; a gate now protects endangered Indiana bats inside, and old stonework survives at the entrance. A flat, paved loop of the Mississippi Greenway runs through the bottomland, while the Spring Valley and River Bluff trails climb to the bluffs for hikers, mountain bikers and riders. Herons, egrets and migrating birds are common. Flash floods make the cave dangerous, so stay out.
