About Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center

This environmental center in Chester Township sits beside the Black River and offers hiking through meadows and hardwood forests. Trails lead through a hemlock gorge and past historic ruins along the river. The area is popular with bird watchers, who may see woodcock, bluebirds, wild turkeys, and several warbler species. A butterfly garden behind the main building highlights native plants that attract pollinators. The property was once the Kay family's country estate, Hidden River Farm, and was dedicated as an environmental center in 1993. Visitors can also reach it through the Patriots' Path, which crosses its fields and forests.
