Set in the Pine Mountain Ridge hills about 80 miles southwest of Atlanta, this state park offers more than 40 miles of hiking trails, including the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail. Trails pass through hardwood and pine forest, cross creeks, and reach small waterfalls. Dowdell's Knob, a nearby overlook, has a life-size statue of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who sometimes picnicked there. Several buildings and facilities date to the Civilian Conservation Corps era of the Great Depression, including cottages and a spring-fed swimming pool. Visitors can also fish, paddle on the park's lakes, take guided horseback rides, and camp. The nearby Little White House State Historic Site preserves the home and warm springs connected to Roosevelt's visits.
