Founded under James Oglethorpe in the mid-1730s, this fort stood on Georgia's southern edge as a defense against Spanish forces during the War of Jenkins' Ear. Archaeologists have uncovered the lives of the roughly 1,000 people who once lived in the town, and a barracks ruin is among the few structures still standing above ground.
