About Fort King

Fort King stood on this ground during the Second Seminole War, serving as an early inland military base in Florida. After the fighting ended, the land went to the newly formed Marion County and became its seat and first courthouse site. Today the roughly 40-acre landmark is jointly owned by the City of Ocala and Marion County and managed by the city, with support from the Fort King Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit. Visitors can walk the grounds during daylight hours, and the Welcome Center and Archaeological Resource Center are open on Fridays and Saturdays.
