Fort Griffin State Historic Site preserves the remains of a cavalry post founded in 1867 on a plateau above the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. The fort was set up to protect settlers from Comanche and Kiowa raids, and it was later renamed for a former Union general who had led Reconstruction-era military government in Texas. Visitors can view interpretive exhibits at the visitor center, walk among the fort ruins, and hike nature trails. The site also hosts the official state longhorn herd, offers overnight camping, and runs guided tours and living history programs.
