This National Park Service site in Fayette County protects the ground where a small log stockade once stood in the Great Meadows. In 1754 Washington's Virginia troops built the post as a supply base during a road-building effort. Tensions with the French, who were pushing into the Ohio River Valley, led to a fight here on July 3, 1754. Rain and damp weapons hampered the defenders, and the colonial side ultimately agreed to surrender. The engagement opened the French and Indian War, which eventually pushed French power out of North America and helped set the stage for the American Revolution. Visitors can walk the grounds, view a reconstructed stockade, watch ranger programs, and explore nearby sites connected to the campaign.
