Fort Stark sits on Jerry's Point, at the southeastern tip of New Castle Island. Its grounds look out over the Piscataqua River, Little Harbor, and the Atlantic. The site was named for John Stark, a New Hampshire commander from the Battle of Bennington in 1777. A small museum displays military artifacts and tells the story of the 22nd Coastal Artillery, which was based here during World War II. Visitors can follow an unmarked walking trail that crosses the roughly ten-acre fort area, use a small beach, or launch kayaks toward the ocean and Little Harbor. Because this is a former military installation, the park warns of unprotected stairs, high walls, rough ground, and slippery rocks, and children need adult supervision. Restrooms are not available and parking is limited.
