Freedom Riders National Monument

A national monument in Anniston commemorating the 1961 Freedom Riders and the bus attack that helped end segregated interstate travel.

About Freedom Riders National Monument

The monument preserves sites tied to 1961 bus journeys by mixed groups of Black and white activists who challenged segregated interstate travel in the Deep South. In Anniston, a white mob attacked one of their buses, and images of the violence drew wide national attention. The former Greyhound bus depot and a second site where the bus was firebombed are part of the monument. A national park service trail links nine stops that show Anniston's role in the civil rights movement. The monument was established in January 2017.
