The monument commemorates the 1963 Birmingham campaign, including its Children's Crusade, and other civil rights events in the city. Its sites are spread across roughly four downtown blocks in the Birmingham Civil Rights District. Visitors can tour churches where meetings were held, walk through parks where protesters marched, and visit museums that display related artifacts. The National Park Service has administered the monument since it was established in 2017.
